The Emerald Cup
Founded in 2003 by Tim Blake at Area 101 in Laytonville, Mendocino County, the Emerald Cup is the world's most respected cannabis competition and California's most culturally significant cannabis event. What began as a 100-person gathering of Emerald Triangle farmers comparing harvests has grown into a multi-day celebration of cannabis craft, genetics, and community.
The Cup celebrated its 20th anniversary in August 2024 at the Oakland Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, marking a dramatic shift from its rural roots to a major urban venue. The event featured hundreds of competition entries across categories including flower, concentrates, edibles, topicals, and pre-rolls. Mendo Dope took home Best in Show, keeping the award in the Emerald Triangle tradition.
The Emerald Cup's judging is considered the gold standard in the industry. Unlike many cannabis competitions that rely on small panels, the Cup uses blind evaluation with detailed scoring rubrics. For small farmers competing against corporate operations, an Emerald Cup award is the most valuable marketing asset in California cannabis.
Hall of Flowers
Hall of Flowers has established itself as California's premier B2B cannabis trade show, connecting brands, retailers, distributors, and service providers. Held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, the event is designed for industry professionals rather than consumers.
The March 2026 edition introduced a hybrid format with a public day for the first time, acknowledging consumer interest in the brands and products on display. The trade show floor features product launches, partnership negotiations, and trend forecasting that shapes retail menus statewide for months afterward.
MJBizCon
While not a California event geographically, MJBizCon is the world's largest cannabis business conference and the annual pilgrimage for California's industry. Held every December in Las Vegas, the conference draws 35,000+ attendees from across the globe. California companies dominate the exhibitor floor, and the event serves as the de facto annual meeting of the state's cannabis industry.
MJBizCon's programming covers policy, finance, technology, cultivation, retail, and emerging markets. For California operators, the event is where deals get made, partnerships form, and the following year's strategies take shape.
Hippie Hill 420 & Its Uncertain Future
For years, San Francisco's Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park hosted one of the world's largest 420 celebrations, with 15,000 to 20,000 people gathering at peak years for an unofficial but massive cannabis festival. The event was never formally organized — it grew organically from San Francisco's counterculture roots.
The organized version of Hippie Hill 420 was canceled in both 2024 and 2025 after organizers were unable to secure sponsors willing to fund the event's production, security, and city permit costs. An informal gathering persists — people still show up on April 20 — but the large-scale, semi-organized celebration with vendors, stages, and programming has not returned.
In response to Hippie Hill's demise, cannabis journalist David Downs organized SF Weed Week and the Space Walk — a series of dispensary crawls, panels, and cannabis-friendly events running April 13–20, 2025. The concept distributed the celebration across multiple venues rather than concentrating it in a single park.
Outside Lands: Grass Lands
San Francisco's Outside Lands Music Festival made history in 2018 by becoming the first major US music festival to legally sell and allow cannabis consumption on-site. The dedicated cannabis area, called Grass Lands, features 20+ purveyors and 35+ brands offering flower, pre-rolls, edibles, and concentrates for purchase and on-site consumption.
Grass Lands operates as a 21+ fenced area with separate ID verification, purchase limits, and designated consumption zones. The model demonstrated that cannabis could be integrated into large-scale entertainment events safely and legally — a proof of concept that other festivals and venues across the country are now replicating.
Outside Lands returns August 7–9, 2026 at Golden Gate Park, with Grass Lands confirmed as a returning feature.
Industry Organizations
California's cannabis advocacy and trade organizations are the most numerous and influential in the country:
- California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA) — the state's largest trade association with 500+ members and 670+ brands represented. Based in Sacramento, CCIA leads legislative advocacy, was instrumental in passing AB 564, and hosts regular policy briefings and networking events
- Origins Council — a coalition of six regional cannabis associations representing 900+ member farms, primarily from the Emerald Triangle and other legacy cultivation regions. The council advocates for appellation protections, small-farm tax relief, and cultivation cap enforcement
- California NORML — the state chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, focused on consumer rights and policy reform. CA NORML was a lead sponsor of AB 564 and continues to advocate for DUI law reform, employment protections, and federal policy change
- Supernova Women — founded by Amber Senter, this organization supports BIPOC entrepreneurs entering the cannabis industry through education, networking, and direct assistance with licensing and business development. Based in Oakland, Supernova Women has become a national model for cannabis equity advocacy
- Cannabis Distribution Association (CDA) — represents the supply chain segment of the industry, including distributors, transporters, and logistics providers. CDA advocates for streamlined distribution regulations and inter-regional transport policies
California cannabis events draw thousands of visitors. If you are planning a trip, check event dates — attending the Emerald Cup, Hall of Flowers public day, or Outside Lands with Grass Lands adds a unique dimension to a cannabis-focused California visit. Book accommodations early, as events sell out surrounding hotels.
